Agricultural scientists have assumed that as long their research and the resultant technology increased food production and availability, they and the end users were somehow exempt from negotiating and re-negotiating the moral bargain that is the foundation of the modern democratic state (Thompson, 1989).

Most Americans think, as Thomas Jefferson did, that the practice of agriculture produces honorable farmers who are the backbone of the nation and a primary source of its cultural richness.
