On his many travels, he faithfully sent postcards and letters home, describing his trip, the surrounding countryside, his demeanor and state of health, even including his weight as an inside, family joke. 5 Clark stayed in close touch with his extended family, visiting frequently by car (the small towns of Turlock and Rantoul where Clark had grown up were within a 20-mile radius of the Champaign-Urbana University of Illinois campus). A College Man Despite his affinity for his family and home life, like many young men of his time, Clark was eager to leave the family farm in search of new career opportunities.

The school was located, according to Clark, in “the slum district of the town [populated by] children of the saloon keepers and the prostitutes of the town and all colors. . ”7 Clark taught school for three years. In 1893, he got the chance to return to the University of Illinois and quickly took the job. He began his academic career as an assistant professor of rhetoric, initially replacing a Professor Brownlee who had taken a leave of absence. Clark quickly advanced himself in the university in what would become a familiar pattern of opportunism throughout his career.

6 Despite his delay in pursuing a career, Clark’s ambitions moved him quickly upward. Studying rhetoric, Clark earned his bachelor’s degree in 1890 at the age of 28. Despite his age, Clark embraced the opportunity to engage in various student activities, including membership in a fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega. He saw himself as “being a politician” but, he acknowledged, he found he enjoyed managing campaigns more than running as a candidate himself. Clark also worked for the local 24 D e a n s of M e n a n d Mode r n C ol l e ge C u lt u r e newspaper, the Champaign News-Gazette.
